Summary

Perfectionism and responsibility are linked to Obsessive-Compulsive (OC) symptoms. While responsibility explains more variance, perfectionism independently predicts OC symptoms, suggesting a significant, underestimated role.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Background:

  • Theoretical links exist between perfectionism, responsibility, and Obsessive-Compulsive (OC) symptoms.
  • Recent research has increasingly focused on the role of responsibility in OC symptoms.
  • The relative empirical importance of perfectionism versus responsibility in OC symptoms remains underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To empirically investigate the independent and relative contributions of perfectionism and responsibility to Obsessive-Compulsive symptoms.
  • To compare the predictive power of perfectionism and responsibility in the context of OC symptomology.

Main Methods:

  • Correlational analysis was used to examine the relationship between perfectionism, two measures of responsibility, and Obsessive-Compulsive symptoms.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Hierarchical regression analysis was employed to determine the unique variance accounted for by perfectionism and responsibility.
  • Main Results:

    • Both perfectionism and responsibility demonstrated moderate correlations with Obsessive-Compulsive symptoms.
    • Responsibility accounted for a larger proportion of variance in OC symptoms.
    • Perfectionism remained a significant predictor of Obsessive-Compulsive symptoms even after controlling for responsibility.

    Conclusions:

    • Responsibility is significantly associated with Obsessive-Compulsive symptoms.
    • Perfectionism also shows an independent association with Obsessive-Compulsive symptoms, potentially playing an underestimated role.
    • Findings suggest a need to reconsider the central role of responsibility in cognitive models and treatments for OCD, acknowledging perfectionism's contribution.
