Transurethral resection for benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) can impact erectile function. While some men experience decreased potency post-surgery, others see improvements or recovery over time.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Andrology
  • Men's Health

Background:

  • Benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) is a common condition in aging men.
  • Surgical interventions for BPE, such as transurethral resection (TURP), are widely performed.
  • The potential impact of TURP on erectile function is a significant concern for patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively assess the changes in erectile function in men undergoing TURP for BPE.
  • To evaluate the long-term effects of TURP on sexual potency.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study involving 98 men with BPE.
  • Assessment of erectile function preoperatively and at 3 and 6 months post-TURP.
  • Inclusion of penile blood pressure and papaverine-induced tumescence testing.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Preoperatively, 38.8% (38/98) of men had insufficient erectile function for intercourse.
  • At 3 months post-TURP, 3 of 60 potent men reported decreased erectile ability, while 2 reported improvement.
  • At 6 months, 2 of these 3 men recovered preoperative potency; one still had reduced function. Papaverine testing indicated reduced tumescence despite normal penile blood pressure.

Conclusions:

  • Transurethral resection for benign prostatic enlargement may lead to temporary or persistent changes in erectile function.
  • A subset of patients may experience decreased erectile ability post-TURP, with some recovery possible over time.
  • Further investigation into the mechanisms of erectile dysfunction post-TURP is warranted.
