Background:

  • Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) requires accurate monitoring for persistent disease.
  • Complete hydatidiform mole is a common form of GTD.
  • Clinical utility of tumor markers in GTD management is an ongoing area of research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical utility of cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) levels in predicting persistent gestational trophoblastic disease.
  • To assess the correlation between pre-evacuation CA-125 levels and the development of persistent GTD following complete hydatidiform mole.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 51 patients with pathologically confirmed complete hydatidiform mole was studied.
  • CA-125 levels were measured prior to suction molar evacuation.

    • A twofold increase in CA-125 levels was observed in the persistent disease group.

    Conclusions:

    • Pre-evacuation CA-125 levels appear to be a valuable predictor for identifying patients at risk of developing persistent gestational trophoblastic disease.
    • This biomarker may aid in early detection and management strategies for GTD.
    • Further research can explore the integration of CA-125 into routine GTD surveillance protocols.
