Serum interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) levels are elevated in cluster headache (CH) patients, indicating immune system activation. This inflammatory marker increases further during CH attacks compared to between attacks and healthy individuals.

Background:

  • Cluster headache (CH) is a debilitating neurological disorder.
  • The role of inflammation in CH pathophysiology is not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum levels of interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) in episodic CH patients.
  • To determine if IL-1 beta levels correlate with CH attack phases.

  • Serum IL-1 beta was measured using a specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
  • 24 episodic CH patients and 45 healthy controls were included.

  • Elevated serum IL-1 beta was observed in all CH patients compared to controls.
  • IL-1 beta levels were significantly higher in CH patients between attacks compared to controls.
