Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of theophylline on diaphragmatic blood flow (Qdi) and oxygen consumption (VO2di) in dogs.
  • To assess changes in VO2di and total-body oxygen consumption (VO2TB) during inspiratory resistive loading with and without theophylline.

Main Methods:

  • Eight anesthetized dogs were studied during quiet and loaded breathing.
  • Diaphragmatic blood flow was measured using the radioactive microsphere technique.
  • Diaphragmatic oxygen consumption was calculated from Qdi and arterio-venous oxygen difference.
