Summary

Intraperitoneal insulin absorption remains consistent in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus patients even after long-term therapy with implanted devices. This study confirms stable insulin uptake via the peritoneal membrane over time.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Metabolic Disorders
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Intraperitoneal insulin therapy offers a potential alternative for diabetes management.
  • Implanted programmable pumps allow for continuous or on-demand insulin delivery.
  • Long-term effects of intraperitoneal insulin absorption require thorough investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess changes in insulin absorption through the peritoneal membrane.
  • To evaluate the impact of long-term intraperitoneal insulin therapy on insulin pharmacokinetics.
  • To determine the efficacy of implanted devices for sustained insulin delivery.

Main Methods:

  • Study included seven patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM).
  • Patients received intraperitoneal insulin via implanted programmable pumps.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Plasma glucose and free insulin levels were monitored after 3 and 30 months of therapy.
  • Main Results:

    • Plasma free insulin profiles showed no significant alterations after 30 months of therapy.
    • Insulin absorption patterns remained comparable to initial observations.
    • The peritoneal membrane demonstrated consistent insulin uptake over the study period.

    Conclusions:

    • Intraperitoneal insulin absorption is not affected by long-term therapy with implanted devices in IDDM patients.
    • Implanted pump systems provide reliable insulin delivery and absorption.
    • Peritoneal insulin delivery is a stable long-term therapeutic option.
