  • Assessed symptoms including wheeze, dyspnoea, cough, phlegm, and allergy history.
  • Measured lung function using peak expiratory flow (PEF) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1).
  • Utilized PEF variability as an indicator of bronchial lability.

  • Three or more symptoms increased the risk of PEF < 70% (OR=4.4), diurnal PEF variation >10% (OR=4.4), and between-day PEF variation (OR=6.6).

Conclusions:

  • Subject-reported respiratory symptoms are demonstrably linked to impaired lung function.
  • Increased variability in peak flow is also associated with the presence of respiratory symptoms.
