    Area of Science:

    • Nursing Practice
    • Healthcare Management
    • Health Services Research

    Background:

    • Increasing demand for cost-effective healthcare necessitates clearly defined nursing roles.
    • Nurses must justify their contributions to patient care.
    • This study examines the implications of nursing role definition for service provision in Hong Kong.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the implications of defining nursing roles for service provision in Hong Kong.
    • To explore the activities of registered nurses (RNs) and enrolled nurses (ENs).
    • To identify potential discrepancies in nursing role perceptions among different staff grades.

    Main Methods:

    • A two-stage descriptive study was conducted.
    • Initial data gathered through group interviews to identify RN and EN activities.
    • Follow-up questionnaire administered to 410 RNs across three grades, assessing agreement on 67 activities using a 5-point Likert scale.

    Main Results:

    • High agreement was found for 65 out of 67 RN activities (P < 0.001).
    • High agreement was found for 56 out of 67 EN activities (P < 0.001).
    • Significant lack of agreement existed among different nursing staff grades regarding role perceptions.

    Conclusions:

    • The study underscores the need to reconsider the contribution of ENs within Hong Kong's nursing structure due to perceived activity overlap with RNs.
    • Findings have implications for nursing management and future research on role interpretation for quality patient care.
    • Clearer definition of nursing roles is essential for effective service provision and management.
