Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) is a feasible surgical technique offering aesthetic and functional benefits. This study presents a method for LS, successfully completing it in most patients.

Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery

Background:

  • Laparoscopic techniques are increasingly applied to abdominal procedures following the success of laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
  • Laparoscopic splenectomy presents unique challenges in vascular pedicle control, organ handling, and specimen retrieval.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a specific technique for performing laparoscopic splenectomy.
  • To evaluate the feasibility and outcomes of laparoscopic splenectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) was attempted in 7 patients between February and October 1993.
  • Indications for splenectomy included idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (5 patients) and hereditary microspherocytosis (2 patients).
  • One patient underwent concomitant laparoscopic cholecystectomy and splenectomy.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • LS was completed in 6 out of 7 patients; one conversion to open surgery was necessary due to obscured vision.
  • One spleen retrieval required minilaparotomy due to bag breakage.
  • Postoperative outcomes included early oral intake, with some patients experiencing pulmonary atelectasis and requiring blood transfusions.

Conclusions:

  • Laparoscopic splenectomy is technically feasible.
  • LS provides the functional and aesthetic advantages associated with laparoscopic surgery.
