Summary

The Epilepsy Expert decision support system showed promise, achieving diagnostic accuracy close to human experts. However, limitations in the classification system and system simplicity prevent its current clinical use.

Background:

  • The Epilepsy Expert decision support system was developed based on the 1989 International Classification of Epilepsies and Epileptic Syndromes.
  • This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance and user perception of the Epilepsy Expert system.

Observation:

  • Three epilepsy experts diagnosed 25 patient cases, achieving majority agreement on 25 cases.
  • Expert physicians agreed on 37% of cases and disagreed on 17%.

Findings:

  • The Epilepsy Expert system achieved correct or partly correct diagnoses in 80% (module I) and 76% (modules IV and V) of cases.
  • Expert physicians' diagnoses were correct or partly correct in 100%, 64%, and 80% of cases.
  • The system's performance was found to be close to that of human experts, but overall only partly successful.
