Summary

Idiopathic neonatal cholelithiasis, or jaundice in newborns caused by gallstones, is rare but increasingly recognized. This case highlights spontaneous resolution, suggesting conservative management for asymptomatic infants.

Background:

  • Neonatal jaundice is rarely caused by cholelithiasis (gallstones).
  • Predisposing factors include hemolysis, biliary anomalies, parenteral nutrition, and prolonged fasting.
  • Idiopathic neonatal cholelithiasis is emerging as more common than previously thought.

Observation:

  • A case of idiopathic neonatal choledochal lithiasis (gallstones in the bile duct) was observed.
  • The infant presented with jaundice.
  • The condition resolved spontaneously within a few days.

Findings:

  • Ultrasonography is crucial for diagnosing and monitoring neonatal cholelithiasis.
  • Idiopathic neonatal choledochal lithiasis can be a self-limiting condition.
