Dorsal scalloping by calcified disc herniation

Summary

Dorsal disc herniation can cause vertebral scalloping, a rare finding previously only seen in the lumbar spine. This study highlights an unusual case of dorsal disc herniation causing scalloping, with specific imaging characteristics.

Background:

Vertebral scalloping is typically associated with lumbar disc herniation.
Dorsal disc herniation causing vertebral scalloping is exceptionally rare.

Observation:

A case of dorsal scalloping was observed.
The cause was identified as a large, calcified dorsal disc herniation.

Findings:

The herniation presented with unusual T1-weighted hyperintensity on MRI.
This hyperintensity indicated calcifications within the disc herniation.

Implications:

Disc herniation can occur at the dorsal level and cause vertebral scalloping.
T1-weighted MRI hyperintensity may suggest calcification in dorsal disc herniations.
