Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Irritability and anger outbursts are common symptoms in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
  • Existing treatments for PTSD may not fully address severe irritability.
  • Dysregulation in neurotransmitter systems, especially serotonergic pathways, is linked to impulse control disorders.

Observation:

  • Two cases of veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) experiencing significant irritability were treated with lithium.
  • The use of lithium was associated with a reduction in irritability and angry outbursts in these patients.

Findings:

  • Lithium demonstrated potential efficacy in managing severe irritability in veterans with PTSD.
  • The findings align with evidence suggesting lithium's utility in impulse control disorders.
  • Neurotransmitter dysregulation, particularly involving serotonin, provides a rationale for psychopharmacological intervention.

Implications:

  • Lithium may be a viable treatment option for irritability in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
  • Further research is warranted to investigate the role of lithium in treating PTSD-related irritability.
  • This study supports a psychopharmacologic approach to managing anger and impulse control issues in PTSD.
