Background:

Schizophrenia treatment with neuroleptics is linked to sexual dysfunction.
The specific contributions of schizophrenia and its pharmacologic treatment to sexual impairment remain unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare sexual function in drug-free schizophrenic patients, neuroleptic-treated schizophrenic patients, and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

A structured interview assessed sexual function quantitatively and qualitatively.
Study included 122 male subjects: 20 drug-free schizophrenic patients, 51 neuroleptic-treated schizophrenic patients, and 51 healthy controls.

Main Results:

Both schizophrenic groups reported high rates of sexual dysfunction.

Neuroleptic treatment was associated with arousal and orgasm impairments and sexual dissatisfaction.

Reduced sexual desire was noted in both schizophrenic groups, with decreased sexual thoughts specific to untreated patients.
