Summary

Bronchial hyperreactivity (BH) occurs in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) but not in snorers. Nasal CPAP therapy reduced BH in OSAS patients, independent of disease severity.

Background:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is associated with various respiratory complications.
  • Bronchial hyperreactivity (BH) is a condition characterized by an exaggerated bronchoconstrictor response.
  • The relationship between OSAS and BH requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of BH in patients with OSAS, heavy snorers, and light snorers.
  • To assess the correlation between BH and OSAS severity.
  • To evaluate the effect of nasal CPAP therapy on BH in OSAS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study involving 48 subjects divided into three groups: OSAS, heavy snorers, and mild snorers.
  • Methacholine challenge test (MCT) used to assess BH.
  • Nasal CPAP treatment administered to patients with positive MCT, followed by repeat MCT.

Main Results:

  • BH was present in 4 out of 16 OSAS patients (25%) but absent in heavy and mild snorers.
  • No correlation was found between BH and the severity of OSAS (hypopnea-apnea index).
  • Nasal CPAP therapy led to a decrease in methacholine responsiveness in patients with BH.
