Background:

  • Growing skull fractures are a rare complication, accounting for 1.6% of all skull fractures.
  • This study reviews seven cases treated between 1983 and 1993.

Observation:

  • Three distinct types of growing skull fractures were identified based on etiology, CT findings, and surgical observations.
  • Type I involves a leptomeningeal cyst, Type II features damaged and gliotic brain, and Type III presents with a porencephalic cyst extending into the subgaleal space.
  • One patient exhibited a combination of Type I and Type III.

Findings:

  • All seven patients had mild to moderate initial head injuries and neurological deficits.
  • Progressive neurological deficits correlated with fracture growth in five cases.
