Background:

Gallbladder carcinoma is a rare malignancy with low incidence rates.
Clinical presentation is often nonspecific, leading to late-stage diagnosis in most patients.
Adenocarcinomas constitute approximately 90% of gallbladder cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

To summarize the epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of gallbladder carcinoma.

Main Methods:

Review of existing literature on gallbladder carcinoma.
Analysis of incidence rates and patient demographics.
Evaluation of diagnostic challenges and treatment modalities.

Main Results:

The incidence rate in the US is 2.2-4.4 per 100,000 persons.
Most patients present with advanced disease, and preoperative diagnosis is infrequent.
Surgical cure is possible for early-stage (mucosa/submucosa) lesions, representing only 16% of cases.
The role of radical surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation is debated or limited.
The 5-year survival rate is less than 5%.

Conclusions:

Gallbladder carcinoma is a highly lethal cancer with a poor prognosis.
Nonspecific symptoms and late diagnosis contribute to limited treatment efficacy.
