Summary

Hysteroscopic endometrial ablation for heavy uterine bleeding can rarely lead to pyometra and bacteremia. Prompt treatment with an intrauterine drain and antibiotics ensures full recovery from this rare complication.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic surgery
  • Minimally invasive procedures
  • Reproductive medicine

Background:

  • Hysteroscopic endometrial ablation is a common procedure for managing excessive uterine bleeding.
  • The procedure is generally considered safe with a low complication rate.

Observation:

  • A 47-year-old woman experienced menorrhagia and underwent endometrial resection and ablation.
  • Following the procedure, she developed pyometra and bacteremia.

Findings:

  • Postoperative pyometra and bacteremia are rare but serious complications of endometrial ablation.
  • This case represents a previously unreported occurrence of pyometra after endometrial resection and ablation.

Implications:

  • Healthcare providers should be aware of the potential for pyometra and bacteremia after hysteroscopic endometrial ablation.
