Effects of exercise on aspects of visual function

Summary

Strenuous exercise did not significantly alter most visual functions. While contrast sensitivity (CS) appeared to improve after cycling and jogging, this was likely due to changes in decision criteria, not physiological sensitivity.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Exercise Physiology
  • Visual Neuroscience

Background:

  • Strenuous exercise is known to impact visual and ocular functions.
  • Previous research suggests potential effects on various visual parameters.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of different exercise types (cycling, jogging, stair running) on visual functions.
  • To differentiate between changes in visual sensitivity and decision criteria following exercise.

Main Methods:

  • Visual acuity, refractive error, dark focus, accommodation amplitude, and pupil size were measured.
  • Contrast sensitivity (CS) was assessed using the ascending method of limits (AML) and method of constant stimuli (MOCS).
  • Exercise protocols included cycling, jogging, and stair running.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • No significant changes were observed in visual acuity, refractive error, dark focus, accommodation, or pupil size.
  • CS improved with AML after cycling and jogging, but not stair running.
  • MOCS revealed no significant change in CS after cycling, suggesting a shift in decision criteria, not sensitivity.

Conclusions:

  • The apparent improvement in contrast sensitivity after exercise is likely attributable to altered decision criteria, possibly linked to mood changes.
  • It is crucial to distinguish between sensitivity and decision criteria when assessing exercise effects on vision.
  • This distinction is vital for accurate evaluation of visual function changes and vision training efficacy.
