Summary

Thyroid hormone levels change during acute myocardial infarction, with thyroxine and triiodothyronine decreasing and reverse T3 increasing. These thyroid status changes do not reliably indicate the severity of heart dysfunction in early infarction stages.

Background:

  • Systemic nonthyroidal illnesses frequently cause abnormal circulating thyroid hormone levels.
  • Acute myocardial infarction is a common nonthyroidal illness impacting thyroid function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate thyroid hormone level changes in patients with acute myocardial infarction undergoing thrombolysis.
  • To assess if thyroid status can serve as an early marker for left ventricular dysfunction post-infarction.

Main Methods:

  • Thyroid parameters (total/free thyroxine, triiodothyronine, reverse T3, TSH) were measured in 16 infarction patients.
  • Blood samples were collected at multiple time points: pre-therapy and 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 72 hours post-admission.
  • Patients were stratified based on CK-MB levels to compare thyroid parameter changes.
