    Summary

    Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) is linked to low serum zinc. Zinc gluconate treatment improved AE symptoms and increased zinc levels in affected children and their families.

    Background:

    • Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) is a rare genetic disorder of zinc absorption.
    • Characteristic skin lesions and failure to thrive are hallmarks of AE.
    • Previous studies suggest a link between AE and zinc deficiency.

    Observation:

    • Two pediatric patients presented with classic AE symptoms.
    • Low serum zinc levels were detected prior to any therapeutic intervention.
    • Family members also exhibited low serum zinc levels, suggesting a familial predisposition.

    Findings:

    • Treatment with zinc gluconate led to increased serum zinc levels in the patients.
    • Clinical improvement, including resolution of skin lesions, was observed following zinc supplementation.
    • A notable symptom preceding exacerbations was a change in hair color to red and excessive drooling, which resolved with treatment.

    Implications:

    • This study reinforces the critical role of zinc in pediatric dermatological health.
    • Early diagnosis and zinc supplementation are crucial for managing acrodermatitis enteropathica.
    • Identifying subclinical zinc deficiency in family members is important for comprehensive care.
