Summary

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) show good patient survival rates. Peritonitis remains a primary concern, impacting transfers, hospitalizations, and mortality in dialysis patients.

Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Renal Medicine
  • Dialysis Technology

Background:

  • Peritoneal dialysis is a crucial renal replacement therapy.
  • Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) are common modalities.
  • Understanding long-term outcomes is vital for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate clinical outcomes of CAPD and CCPD.
  • To analyze treatment modality, compliance, rehabilitation, complications, and survival.
  • To identify factors influencing patient and technique survival.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records for 305 patients trained between 1985-1992.
  • Data collected on demographics, renal disease, dialysis modality, assistance needs, transfer/hospitalization causes, peritonitis, rehabilitation, compliance, and mortality.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of patient survival and technique survival rates.
  • Main Results:

    • The study included 305 patients (58.7% male), with diabetic nephropathy being the most common diagnosis (41%).
    • Peritonitis was the leading cause of hospitalization (36.7%) and transfer (69.5%).
    • One, two, and three-year patient survival rates were 87.9%, 76.6%, and 67.0%, respectively. Technique survival rates were 65.5%, 45.5%, and 30.6%.

    Conclusions:

    • A large Hispanic peritoneal dialysis program demonstrates favorable patient survival.
    • Despite improvements, peritonitis remains a significant challenge, contributing to transfers, hospitalizations, and mortality.
    • Ongoing efforts to reduce peritonitis rates are crucial for improving long-term outcomes in peritoneal dialysis.
