Summary

Viral hepatitis from blood transfusions, mainly hepatitis B and C, posed serious risks. Donor screening and testing for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti-HBc have drastically reduced hepatitis B virus (HBV) transmission risks.
