    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To establish priorities in vascular nursing research.
    • To identify significant problems affecting patients with vascular disease that nursing research can address.
    • To guide the SVN and its members in future research endeavors.

    Main Methods:

    • A three-round Delphi technique was employed.
    • 176 members of the Society for Vascular Nursing participated.
    • Expert panels identified, refined, and rated researchable questions based on impact on patient welfare.

    Main Results:

    • 135 researchable questions were developed from 182 initial items.
    • The highest research priority identified was: "What are the most important barriers to compliance with treatment regimens (diet, cessation of smoking, etc) in the patient with vascular disease?"
    • Other key priorities included nursing standards, patient education, risk factor modification, pain management, and cost-effective care.

    Conclusions:

    • The study successfully identified and prioritized key areas for vascular nursing research.
    • Understanding barriers to treatment compliance is paramount for improving vascular patient outcomes.
    • These priorities will direct future research efforts within the Society for Vascular Nursing.
