Summary

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) patients showed no significant differences in T cell subsets compared to controls. However, natural killer (NK) cells were lower in active PMR, with numbers approaching control levels at two-year follow-up.

Background:

  • Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory condition affecting older adults.
  • The role of lymphocyte subsets in PMR pathogenesis remains incompletely understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively characterize peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets in patients with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR).
  • To compare immune cell profiles between PMR patients and healthy controls.
  • To assess the impact of corticosteroid treatment on lymphocyte populations in PMR.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study of 23 PMR patients over two years.
  • Monoclonal antibodies and flow cytometry used for lymphocyte characterization.
  • Analysis included T cell subsets (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+), functional T cell subsets (virgin, memory), and natural killer (NK) cells (CD16+, CD56+).
