Summary

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) therapy significantly improved word-fluency in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, suggesting enhanced frontal lobe function. This treatment shows promise for cognitive deficits in MS.

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) often impairs cognitive functions, resembling subcortical dementia and frontal lobe syndrome.
  • Patients with MS, particularly those with progressive courses, exhibit deficits in cognitive and behavioral functions, including speech spontaneity and word retrieval.

Observation:

  • Three women with MS underwent treatment with picotesla-range electromagnetic fields (EMF).
  • Word-fluency, a measure of frontal lobe function, was assessed using the Thurstone Word-Fluency Test before and after EMF treatment.
  • MS patients initially performed significantly below normal controls on word-fluency tests.

Findings:

  • A series of 4-5 EMF treatment sessions led to a 100% increase in word output.
  • Post-treatment word fluency scores (mean: 83.3 +/- 14.0 words) approached those of normal controls.
