Summary

Carbamazepine can cause diarrhea, typically mild. However, this report details two severe cases of carbamazepine-induced diarrhea that necessitated drug discontinuation.

Background:

  • Carbamazepine is a widely prescribed anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing medication.
  • Gastrointestinal side effects are known but generally considered mild.

Observation:

  • Two patients experienced severe diarrhea during carbamazepine therapy.
  • The diarrhea was a significant adverse event in both cases.

Findings:

  • Severe diarrhea is a potential, albeit uncommon, side effect of carbamazepine.
  • Drug withdrawal was required to resolve the severe gastrointestinal symptoms.

Implications:

  • Clinicians should be aware of the potential for severe diarrhea with carbamazepine.
