Background:

  • Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic condition affecting the bladder.
  • Accurate diagnosis of IC can be challenging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the electrovesicographic (EVG) pattern in women with interstitial cystitis (IC).
  • To evaluate the potential of EVG as a diagnostic tool for IC.

Main Methods:

  • Electrovesicogram (EVG) performed on 9 women with IC and 7 healthy controls.
  • Electrodes placed above pubic tubercles and symphysis pubis; reference electrode on lower limb.
  • Recordings taken with both full and empty urinary bladders.

Main Results:

  • Healthy women showed regular triphasic pacesetter potentials (PPs) on EVG.
  • IC patients displayed a 'vesicoarrhythmic pattern' with irregular rhythm, higher frequency, and amplitude.
  • PP amplitude was lower in empty bladders for both groups, but the vesicoarrhythmic pattern persisted in IC patients.

Conclusions:

  • A distinct vesicoarrhythmic electrographic pattern is identifiable in interstitial cystitis (IC).
  • EVG serves as a simple, noninvasive, and cost-effective investigative tool for IC diagnosis.
