Summary

This preliminary study suggests flumazenil may help alcohol withdrawal symptoms. The benzodiazepine antagonist showed a brief anxiogenic effect before improving symptoms in some patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of the benzodiazepine antagonist flumazenil in early alcohol withdrawal.
  • To explore the hypothesis of altered benzodiazepine receptor function during alcohol withdrawal.

Main Methods:

  • A double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 8 alcoholic patients in early withdrawal.
  • Administration of flumazenil versus placebo.
  • Assessment of mood, physical symptoms, and withdrawal severity via self- and observer ratings.

Main Results:

  • Flumazenil induced a transient, mild anxiogenic effect.
  • Subsequent amelioration of alcohol withdrawal symptoms was observed.
  • Two patients showed marked improvement with flumazenil treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Flumazenil may have a therapeutic role in managing alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
  • Findings support the involvement of the benzodiazepine receptor system in alcohol withdrawal.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm these preliminary observations.
