Summary

A rare case of aortic arch dissection linked to a persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in an adult man is presented. This aortic dissection was successfully treated with aortic arch replacement surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Medical Case Reports

Background:

  • A case report details an adult male with a history of pectus excavatum and a persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA).
  • The patient underwent pectus excavatum repair 10 years prior but did not receive surgical correction for the PDA.
  • A retained substernal strut from the pectus repair was also noted.

Observation:

  • The patient presented with a chest infection, exhibiting a audible PDA murmur on examination.
  • Chest X-ray revealed a widened mediastinum and the presence of the pectus repair strut.
  • Further diagnostic imaging identified a dissection of the aortic arch.

Findings:

  • The primary finding is an unusual association between a persistent ductus arteriosus and aortic arch dissection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The dissection was confirmed and required surgical intervention.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights a potential, albeit rare, complication of untreated PDA in adults.
    • It underscores the importance of timely surgical correction for congenital heart defects like PDA.
    • The findings may prompt further investigation into the biomechanical relationship between PDA and aortic pathologies.
