Ultrasonography-guided needling effectively treats rotator cuff calcific tendinitis. This minimally invasive technique offers pain relief and restored shoulder function without radiation exposure.

Background:

  • Calcific tendinitis of the rotator cuff causes significant shoulder pain and limited mobility.
  • Conservative treatments are often ineffective for persistent, disabling symptoms.

Observation:

  • A novel technique utilizing multiple needle punctures, aspiration, and lavage under continuous three-dimensional ultrasonographic (US) visualization was developed.
  • The procedure was performed under local anesthesia, targeting rotator cuff calcifications in two patients with refractory shoulder pain.

Findings:

  • Both patients achieved complete pain relief and full range of motion following the US-guided intervention.
  • One patient experienced immediate recovery, while the other recovered within three days.

Implications:

  • This US-guided lavage technique presents a safe and effective alternative for managing rotator cuff calcific tendinitis.
  • The absence of radiation exposure makes it a favorable option compared to fluoroscopically guided procedures.
