Abstract:
Photosynthesis of vitamin D is an endocrine function of the skin. Unfortunately this function can be affected by several factors, such as seasonal changes, clothing, melanin in the skin, sunscreens, and age. Vitamin D deficiency can be prevalent in the elderly, especially those whose lack of mobility prevents them from having adequate sun exposure. Although many foods in the United States are fortified with vitamin D, the elderly individual may need to receive daily supplements.
