Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition.
  • Temporary hair loss is a known complication of scalp psoriasis.
  • The link between psoriasis and scarring alopecia remains controversial.

Observation:

  • A case study of a 38-year-old woman with progressive hair loss due to chronic scalp psoriasis.
  • Clinical examination revealed scarring alopecia coexisting with psoriatic plaques.
  • Histological analysis showed fibrosis, inflammation, and psoriatic scalp features.

Findings:

  • Histology confirmed cord-like fibrosis replacing hair follicles.
  • Perivascular lymphohistiocytic infiltrate was observed in the upper dermis.
  • The findings suggest a direct link between psoriasis and scarring alopecia.

Implications:

  • Psoriasis may cause irreversible scarring alopecia.
  • Early and effective antipsoriatic therapy is crucial.
  • Prompt treatment can halt hair loss and prevent permanent scarring.
