Summary

Plasma interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) levels are elevated in panic disorder patients and may serve as a diagnostic marker. These higher IL-1 beta concentrations persist even during alprazolam treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Panic disorder is a debilitating psychiatric condition.
  • Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine implicated in various physiological and pathological processes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate plasma IL-1 beta concentrations in patients with panic disorder.
  • To determine if IL-1 beta levels change during alprazolam treatment for panic disorder.

Main Methods:

  • Plasma IL-1 beta concentrations were measured in 10 outpatients with panic disorder.
  • Measurements were taken before and on days 30 and 32 of alprazolam treatment (2-2.5 mg/day).
  • Patient values were compared to those of control subjects.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Plasma IL-1 beta concentrations were significantly higher in panic disorder patients compared to control subjects.
  • Elevated IL-1 beta levels were observed both before and during alprazolam therapy.
  • IL-1 beta concentrations did not appear to be directly related to the current level of panic disorder symptomatology.

Conclusions:

  • Plasma IL-1 beta may represent a potential biomarker for panic disorder.
  • IL-1 beta levels in panic disorder patients seem independent of current symptom severity and alprazolam treatment effects.
