Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Neurology
  • Comparative Oncology
  • Neuro-oncology

Background:

  • Behavioral changes and circling in adult goats can indicate serious neurological conditions.
  • Intra-axial brain masses require thorough diagnostic investigation.

Observation:

  • Neurologic examination, CSF analysis, hematologic evaluation, and CT scans suggested an intra-axial mass in the affected goat.
  • The goat's condition worsened, leading to euthanasia.

Findings:

  • Necropsy revealed a large glioma with oligodendrocyte differentiation in the right cerebral hemisphere.
  • Immunohistochemistry confirmed a malignant, poorly differentiated tumor, with caudal brain herniation observed.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for gliomas in goats, contributing to comparative oncology research.
  • Understanding brain tumors in livestock is crucial for animal welfare and disease management.
  • The findings underscore the importance of advanced diagnostics in veterinary neurology.
