Trichinosis. Still a public health threat

Abstract:
Trichinosis remains a worldwide public health problem, although most US physicians have little or no experience with the disease. A history of exposure to raw or undercooked pork and findings of myopathy, eosinophilia, and periorbital edema are characteristic. The diagnosis can be confirmed with tissue biopsy or serodiagnostic testing. Mild infections respond to limited bed rest and use of analgesics and antipyretics. More severe cases can be treated effectively with corticosteroids and anthelminthics.
