Summary

Intraoperative awareness during Caesarean sections can be detected using mid-latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEPs). Changes in MLAEPs indicate adequate anesthesia, while preserved MLAEPs correlate with patient recall of intraoperative events.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate intraoperative wakefulness and mid-latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEP) during general anesthesia for Caesarean sections.
  • To correlate MLAEP changes with signs of inadequate anesthesia and patient recall.

Main Methods:

  • 20 patients undergoing elective Caesarean section under general anesthesia were studied.
  • Mid-latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEP) were recorded before and during anesthesia.
  • Purposeful movements and patient recall of intraoperative events (dreams, hallucinations) were assessed postoperatively.
