    Summary

    JC virus, a human papovavirus, was identified in all seven progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy cases studied. This finding strengthens the association between JC virus and this rare neurological disease.

    Background:

    • Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare, demyelinating disease of the central nervous system.
    • The etiology of PML has been linked to polyomaviruses, specifically JC virus.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the presence and characteristics of papovaviruses in brain tissue from PML patients.
    • To confirm the association between JC virus and PML.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of brain tissue samples from seven PML patients.
    • Virus isolation in tissue culture.
    • Detection of virus in tissue sections using immunofluorescence.
    • Serological and biological characterization of isolated JC virus strains.
