Background:

Depression is a common mental illness requiring accessible screening methods.
Traditional screening methods may have barriers to access and confidentiality.
Technological advancements offer new avenues for mental health assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of fully automated telephone screening for depression symptoms.
To assess the feasibility of using digital voice and touch-tone responses for mental health screening.
To determine the accessibility and user satisfaction of this novel screening approach.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional study utilizing a 2-week telephone survey.
1812 participants accessed a central telephone/computer system via toll-free calls.
The Zung Depression Scale (20 questions) was administered, alongside demographic and satisfaction queries.

Main Results:

No technical issues were reported during the trial.
88.1% of callers completed the screening questionnaire.
25.8% screened positive for moderate/marked depression, and 12.1% for severe/extreme depression, with most untreated.
74.6% found the screening at least moderately helpful.

Conclusions:

Fully automated telephone screening is a viable, low-cost method for identifying depression.
This technology provides a widely accessible and confidential approach to mental illness screening.
The system demonstrated high completion rates and positive user feedback, highlighting its potential for widespread adoption.
