Sudden vision loss during sexual activity can cause retinal hemorrhaging. Most patients experience spontaneous visual recovery without lasting effects.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Neuro-ophthalmology

Background:

  • Sudden visual loss is a concerning symptom requiring prompt evaluation.
  • The association between sexual activity and ocular events is not widely recognized.

Observation:

  • A case series of six patients experiencing sudden vision loss after sexual activity.
  • Patients presented with precipitous vision decrease without apparent predisposing factors.

Findings:

  • Hemorrhaging (intraretinal, preretinal, vitreous) was identified as the cause of vision loss.
  • Visual acuity ranged from mild impairment to profound loss.
  • Five patients showed spontaneous visual improvement within a month; one required laser photocoagulation.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Sexual activity can precipitate retinal vascular events, including hemorrhages and tears.
  • Prognosis for visual recovery is generally excellent with spontaneous resorption of blood.
