Area of Science:

  • Sports Medicine
  • Traumatology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Previous reports documented bungee running injuries primarily in children.
  • The recreational activity involves participants wearing a harness attached to elastic cords, often with a competitive element.

Observation:

  • Three adult cases of bungee running injuries were reported.
  • Injuries occurred at Noble's (Isle of Man) Hospital and Whiston Hospital, Merseyside.
  • Competitors attempted to grab a beer prize, increasing risk-taking behavior.

Findings:

  • All three adult participants sustained injuries.
  • The mechanism of injury involved being forcefully catapulted backward.
  • Enthusiastic spectators may have contributed to the high-risk environment.

Implications:

  • Bungee running poses a significant injury risk to adult participants.
  • Safety guidelines and risk assessments are crucial for such activities.
  • Further research is needed to understand the full spectrum of bungee running injuries.
