Summary

Asthma is a significant health issue in tropical regions. This study found that house dust mites are a primary allergen triggering year-round asthma symptoms in Mauritian patients, linked to elevated immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels.

  • Limited data exists on the influence of atopy on asthma prevalence in tropical climates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and patterns of total serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) titers in asthma patients in Mauritius.
  • To explore the relationship between atopy and asthma in a tropical setting.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 25 asthma patients and 10 healthy controls in Mauritius were enrolled.
  • Participants underwent clinical evaluation, allergy skin prick testing for common aeroallergens, and measurement of serum total IgE levels.
