Background:

Patients with schizophrenia often exhibit deficits in executive functions, impacting daily life.
The Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) is a common neuropsychological tool used to assess executive functions.
The relationship between WCST performance and occupational functioning in schizophrenia remains underexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between performance on the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and occupational functioning in individuals with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
To determine if specific WCST metrics correlate with on-the-job behaviors.

Main Methods:

The study included 89 participants diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder.
Multiple regression analyses were employed to examine relationships between WCST scores and work behaviors.
Analyses controlled for intelligence quotient (IQ) and Digit Symbol Subtest scores, as well as age and education.

Main Results:

Task orientation at work was significantly linked to WCST measures of "Trials to the First Category" and "Total Number Correct".
Social skills at work correlated with WCST "Total Errors" and "Percent Conceptual Level".
Task orientation also showed a relationship with "Percent Conceptual Level" when using age- and education-corrected standard scores.

Conclusions:

The findings support the criterion-related validity of the WCST in a clinical population.
WCST performance is demonstrably related to crucial aspects of occupational functioning in individuals with schizophrenia.
These results offer insights into cognitive and behavioral impairments affecting work capacity in schizophrenia.
