Observation:

  • A 2-year-old female ostrich presented with progressive emaciation over four months.
  • Necropsy revealed a large granulomatous mass obstructing the right nasal passage.
  • Microscopic examination identified fungal hyphae consistent with Aspergillus species and foreign plant material within the mass.

Findings:

  • The nasal mass was diagnosed as a mycotic granuloma.
  • The fungal elements were identified as Aspergillus sp.
  • Foreign plant material was also present, suggesting an initiating factor or concurrent contamination.

Implications:

  • This is the first documented case of a mycotic granuloma restricted to the nasal cavities of an ostrich.
  • The findings suggest Aspergillus sp. can cause localized nasal disease in ratites, distinct from typical respiratory aspergillosis.
  • Further research into avian nasal mycoses and diagnostic approaches for ratites is warranted.
