    Area of Science:

    • Psychiatry and Mental Health Services Research
    • Health Services and Outcomes Research

    Background:

    • Community mental health services are crucial for patient recovery.
    • Traditional hospital-based programs may not always provide optimal long-term outcomes.
    • Assertive Case Management (ACM) offers a structured community-based approach.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of a community treatment program based on Assertive Case Management (ACM).
    • To compare ACM outcomes against traditional hospital-based treatment programs.

    Main Methods:

    • Employed an experimental random assignment design for patient allocation.
    • Monitored patient outcomes over a six-month period.
    • Compared vocational, social, and clinical outcomes between ACM and hospital program groups.

    Main Results:

    • ACM patients demonstrated superior vocational and social outcomes.
    • ACM led to reduced symptomatology, lower recidivism, and shorter hospital stays.
    • ACM patients reported higher quality of life and lower perceived family burden.
    • Overall treatment costs were lower for ACM patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Assertive Case Management is an effective model for community-based mental health treatment.
    • ACM improves patient functioning, reduces healthcare utilization, and lowers costs.
    • ACM positively impacts patient quality of life and reduces family burden.
