Lung-to-heart uptake ratios (LHR) using 99mTc-sestamibi imaging can help assess left ventricular dysfunction. Higher LHR values in myocardial infarction patients indicate impaired ejection fraction, providing valuable clinical information.

Area of Science:

  • Nuclear cardiology
  • Cardiovascular imaging
  • Myocardial perfusion imaging

Background:

  • 201Tl lung uptake is a known marker for left ventricular dysfunction.
  • The utility of 99mTc-sestamibi for evaluating lung-to-heart uptake ratios (LHR) remains to be fully established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if LHR evaluation with 99mTc-sestamibi imaging provides valuable information regarding left ventricular function.
  • To assess the correlation between LHR and left ventricular ejection fraction in patients with myocardial infarction.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 72 male subjects with recent anterior myocardial infarction and 46 gender-matched controls.
  • Utilized 99mTc-sestamibi first-pass ventriculography and SPECT perfusion imaging at rest and during stress.
  • Calculated lung-to-heart count ratios (LHR) from SPECT images.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The control group showed a significant decrease in LHR during stress.
  • Myocardial infarction patients exhibited significantly higher LHR values at rest and stress.
  • LHR values positively correlated with left ventricular ejection fraction at rest and during stress.

Conclusions:

  • LHR measured by 99mTc-sestamibi imaging provides clinically useful information.
  • Both resting and post-exercise LHR values correlate with ejection fraction.
  • LHR is a potential predictor of left ventricular dysfunction.
