    Summary

Prostaglandin treatment effectively terminated early pregnancies in women with delayed menstruation. This method offers a safe, less traumatic alternative to surgical abortion, with potential for self-administration.

    Area of Science:

    • Reproductive Medicine
    • Pharmacology
    • Obstetrics and Gynecology

    Background:

    • Surgical abortion carries physical and emotional trauma.
    • There is a need for less invasive pregnancy termination methods.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intrauterine and vaginal prostaglandins for early pregnancy termination.
    • To assess the potential for self-administration of prostaglandin therapy.

    Main Methods:

    • 309 women with delayed menstruation (3-35 days) received intrauterine or vaginal prostaglandins.
    • Pregnancy outcomes and side effects were monitored.
    • Different prostaglandin analogues and dosages were compared.

    Main Results:

    • 229 out of 275 confirmed pregnancies were successfully terminated without additional therapy.
    • 16:16 dimethyl P.G.E2 vaginal pessary showed the best results.
    • Complications included excessive bleeding (6.1%), requiring curettage, and one case of pelvic sepsis.

    Conclusions:

    • Intrauterine and vaginal prostaglandins are a promising, safe method for early pregnancy termination.
    • The method avoids surgical trauma and often does not require hospital admission.
    • Prostaglandin therapy shows potential as a self-administered technique for pregnancy termination.
