Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with gut microflora alterations.
  • Microflora-associated characteristics (MACs) may be affected in RA patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate MACs in RA patients.
  • To evaluate the effect of sulphasalazine (SASP) on RA patient MACs.

Main Methods:

  • Measured cholesterol to coprostanol conversion, urobilinogen production, and fecal tryptic activity (FTA).
  • Analyzed fecal samples from 19 RA patients on SASP, 21 RA patients not on SASP, and 21 healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • High cholesterol converters were more frequent in untreated RA patients than in controls (p < 0.05).
