    Summary

    Background:

    • Endotoxins are lipopolysaccharides from Gram-negative bacteria.
    • Maternal infections during pregnancy can impact fetal development.
    • The effects of specific bacterial components on pregnancy are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of Escherichia coli endotoxin on pregnancy outcomes in mice.
    • To determine the effects of endotoxin exposure at different gestational stages.
    • To assess fetal development, growth, and potential malformations post-exposure.

    Main Methods:

    • Pregnant mice were administered small doses of E. coli endotoxin on day 13 of gestation.
    • A separate group received endotoxin on day 6 of gestation.
    • Fetal resorption rates, fetal weights, placental weights, and maternal spleen weights were analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • Endotoxin administration on day 13 caused approximately 50% fetal resorption with mild maternal illness.

    • Endotoxin exposure triggers maternal physiological responses, indicated by increased organ weights.
