    Summary

This study validated nursing diagnostic characteristics for Self-Care Deficit, Impaired Mobility, and Pain using cluster analysis. Findings confirm these characteristics accurately identify patient conditions, supporting nursing diagnosis validity.

    Area of Science:

    • Nursing
    • Medical-Surgical Nursing
    • Nursing Diagnosis

    Background:

    • Nursing diagnoses are crucial for effective patient care planning.
    • Validating the defining characteristics of nursing diagnoses enhances their clinical utility.
    • Existing diagnostic labels require ongoing refinement based on empirical evidence.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine if defining characteristics cluster to form nursing diagnostic labels.
    • To establish the construct validity of defining characteristics for Self-Care Deficit, Impaired Mobility, and Pain.
    • To assess the ability of these characteristics to differentiate between patient groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Cluster analysis was performed on signs and symptoms of 309 medical-surgical patients.
    • Patient groups were identified by clinical nurse specialists (CNS) as having or not having specific nursing diagnoses.
    • Cluster scores were analyzed for their capacity to discriminate between these patient groups.

    Main Results:

    • The Self-Care Deficit cluster score effectively differentiated patients with and without the CNS-diagnosis of Self-Care Deficit and Pain.
    • Patients diagnosed with Self-Care Deficit and Impaired Mobility by CNS scored highly on the Impaired Mobility cluster score.
    • The study provides evidence for the construct validity of the examined nursing diagnostic characteristics.

    Conclusions:

    • The defining characteristics for Self-Care Deficit, Impaired Mobility, and Pain demonstrate construct validity.
    • Cluster analysis is a viable method for validating nursing diagnostic characteristics.
    • Findings support the accurate identification of these nursing diagnoses in clinical practice.
